Team USA Wins Gold, Puerto Rico Takes Bronze
LAS VEGAS - For the first time since 2000, the United States has captured a gold medal in international play in men's basketball.
Ending a seven-year drought, Team USA took the gold at the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 on Sunday, defeating Argentina, 118-81.
Orlando Magic center/forward Dwight Howard had his best offensive game of the tournament in the gold medal match, scoring 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting. He hit 6-of-8 free throws, had five rebounds and also blocked four shots.
Howard wasn't the only Magic player to leave Las Vegas with a medal. Teammate Carlos Arroyo helped led Puerto Rico to the bronze medal, defeating Brazil, 111-107. Arroyo scored 30 points and had 10 assists in the victory.
On Saturday, Team USA advanced to the gold medal game with a 135-91 victory against Puerto Rico. Arroyo scored 21 points against the United States, while Howard had nine points and six rebounds to help the U.S. advance.

Team USA, Puerto Rico to Meet in Semifinals
LAS VEGAS - With back-to-back victories, Puerto Rico secured a spot in the semifinals at the FIBA Americas Championship 2007.
After losing to Team USA, Puerto Rico looked like its chances of reaching the final four had slipped away. However, the small island country made a strong surge into the next round following Thursday's 72-66 victory against Canada. That big win came one day after a 92-63 victory against Venezuela.
Orlando Magic guard Carlos Arroyo came up big when his country needed him the most, scoring a game-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Arroyo hit 4-of-7 three pointers, collected five rebounds and also had three assists.
Arroyo will now get another matchup against his Magic teammate Dwight Howard, whose Team USA squad heads into the semifinals as the top seed and only undefeated in the tournament after a 91-76 victory against previously unbeaten Argentina.
Howard once again started in the middle for Team USA, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds to go along with one steal and one block.
The semifinal round will be played on Saturday with Brazil taking on Argentina in the early game (4 p.m. ET - ESPN Classic), followed by Team USA against Puerto Rico (7 p.m. ET - ESPN2).
The bronze medal game will be held on Sunday (4 p.m. ET) and the Gold medal game will take place at 7 p.m. ET.

USA Remains Undefeated, Puerto Rico Tops Venezuela
LAS VEGAS - Carlos Arroyo scored 13 points and dished out seven assists as Puerto Rico claimed a 92-63 victory against Venezuela on Wednesday evening.
The Orlando Magic guard hit 5-of-11 shots from the field, including 3-of-6 from three point range. Arroyo also played well on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a game-high four steals during his 29 minutes of action.
Meanwhile, Team USA continued its domination of the FIBA Americas Championship, topping Uruguay, 118-79.
LeBron James was the star of the night for the United States, hitting a perfect 11-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three point range and finished the evening with 26 points in only 14 minutes of action.
Magic center/forward Dwight Howard started in the middle and scored two points off a pair of free throws. He did not attempt a shot from the field, but did have three rebounds and a block.

Howard's USA Squad Gets Better of Arroyo's Puerto Rican Team
LAS VEGAS - Dwight Howard and Carlos Arroyo were on opposite sides of the court on Tuesday evening - the last time they'll be opposing squads before the Orlando Magic begin training camp in about a month.
Howard's Team USA squad came out on top, defeating Puerto Rico, 117-78. Howard scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in his 17 minutes of action for the U.S. team.
LeBron James led the U.S. with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Carmelo Anthony scored 17, Michael Redd added 15 and Kobe Bryant finished with 14 points.
With the victory, Team USA secured their spot in the semifinals.
Arroyo scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting for Puerto Rico before fouling out near the end of the third quarter. He also had six rebounds and two assists.

Howard's 19 Points Help Team USA Defeat Mexico
LAS VEGAS - Coming off the bench for the first time during these FIBA Americas Championship 2007, Dwight Howard responded with a big game for Team USA.
The Magic forward/center scored 19 poitns in his 18 minutes on the floor as the United States improved to 5-0 with a 127-100 victory against Mexico.
Howard hit 9-of-10 shots from the field and was 1-of-2 from the charity stripe for Team USA. Carmelo Anthony led Team USA with 28 points, while Kobe Bryant scored 21, LeBron James finished with 19 and Michael Redd added 15.
Magic guard Carlos Arroyo scored 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting in his 26 minutes of action, helping Puerto Rico take down Brazil, 97-75. Arroyo also had five rebounds and three assists and Puerto Rico improves to 2-3 in FIBA play.

United States Marches Past Brazil, Now 4-0
LAS VEGAS - The United States improved to 4-0 at the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 with another dominating performance, this time defeating Brazil, 113-76.
Team USA got 21 points apiece from LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, while Kobe Bryant added 20 points and Michael Redd scored 16.
Orlando Magic center/forward Dwight Howard was held to just three points on 1-of-2 shooting. He was also 1-of-2 from the free throw line, in addition to grabbing a pair of rebounds, a steal and a block.
Brazil had the best interior play Team USA has seen so far with Denver Nuggets center Nene anchoring the inside. Nene finished with eight points and five boards, while new San Antonio Spurs rookie Tiago Splitter hit 6-of-10 shots for 13 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Team USA improves to 3-0, Puerto Rico Falls Again
LAS VEGAS - Dwight Howard is making the most of his minutes on the floor during these FIBA Americas Championships 2007.
In 17 minutes on the floor in Team USA's 113-63 victory against Canada, Howard scored eight points, hitting 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down five rebounds, had two blocks and one steal, while committing zero turnovers.
Team USA improved to 3-0 by defeating Canada. The team was led by Carmelo Anthony's 25 points, while Michael Redd continues to have a nice tournament, hitting for 19 points against our neighbors to the north.
Carlos Arroyo scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 25 minutes of play, but Puerto Rico fell to 1-3 overall with an 82-79 loss to Uruguay.

Arroyo's 20 Points Not Enough Against Argentina
LAS VEGAS - Puerto Rico got 20 points from Orlando Magic guard Carlos Arroyo, but it wasn't enough as they fall to 1-2 in the tournament after an 87-75 loss to Argentina.
Arroyo hit 7-of-17 shots, including 4-of-9 three pointers while also dishing out four assists in a team-high 32 minutes of action.
Team USA had Friday off, but that didn't prevent Magic center/forward Dwight Howard from putting some work in. Arroyo Recovers to Help Puerto Rico to Win
LAS VEGAS - One day after playing a game he'd soon like to forget, Carlos Arroyo rebounded to score 16 points and help Puerto Rico to a 108-67 victory against Panama.
On Wednesday, Arroyo was 0-10 from the field and finished with just four points as Puerto Rico fell to Mexico. But the Orlando Magic point guard rebounded on Thursday to hit 6-of-14 shots from the field to go along with five rebounds and eight assists. Puerto Rico is now 1-1 in Group A play.
The United States improved to 2-0 in Group B action, defeating the Virgin Islands, 123-59.
In a very lopsided affair, Magic center/forward Dwight Howard was 2-for-4 from the field and 5-of-9 from the free throw line to finish with nine points. He also had four rebounds and two blocks in 14 minutes of action.
Team USA was led with 22 points each from Carmelo Anthony and Michael Redd, while Amare Stoudamire and Mike Miller each chipped in with 13 apeice.

Howard Scores 12 in Opening Night of FIBA Action
LAS VEGAS - In the opening night of action in the FIBA Americas tournament, Orlando Magic center/forward Dwight Howard scored 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks as Team USA rolled past Venezuela, 112-69.
Howard started the game, alongside LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Jason Kidd and played 14 minutes, hitting 4-of-5 from the field and knocking down 4-of-7 free throws.
Anthony and Michael Redd led Team USA with 17 points each, while Amare Stoudemire added 16 and Bryant scored 14 in a very balanced offensive effort.
Meanwhile, Magic teammate Carlos Arroyo didn't have a very good night in Puerto Rico's 100-89 loss to Mexico. Arroyo missed all 10 shots from the field, include six three-pointers and finished with just four points - all coming from free throws.
